WINE
ROUTE |
|
|
|
This trip begins in Mendoza province,
with a reception at the airport and accomodation in the
city of "great wine". It´s also possible
to start your journey by land from Buenos Aires with our
exclusive vehicles.
|
 |
At
the beginning of our journey we will go to Mendoza´s
Central Region. Famous and recognized wine cellars
and vineyard boutiques can be found as they share
one of the most fertile pieces of land in the region.
|
 |
The
Escorihuela Gascón wine cellar is one of
the most antique cellars in the province. It has
been magnificently restored and it´s only
a few minutes away from the city´s capital,
in the urban zone of Godoy Cruz. It has a beautiful
small park full of flowers. In the house there is
an "art room" with a permanent exhibit,
a tasting room, a boutique and Francis Mallmann´s
restaurant, named after the date of the cellar´s
foundation: 1884, turning it into the oldest one
in the region.
|
 |
 |
Six
kilometers away, in Guaymallén, Santa Ana
wine cellars have their own train that goes from
the vineyard to the house and viceversa. It´s
exact location is Villanueva, in the leafy corner
of Godoy Cruz and Roca, streets that are framed
by an irrigation ditch. In Santa Ana everything
is huge: the patio eucalyptus, the wine cellars,
the antique barrel-making workshop, the eternal
jazmine in the long patio... The tasting room is
just steps away from the exit: at the bar and oak
tables you can sample the varieties from the Cepas
Privadas line, or a glass of Vile Neuve, the house
champagne. |
 |
We
cross the gate of Domaine St. Diego. We're in Lunlunta,
Maipú, in the valley formed by the old riverbed
of the Mendoza river. We find ourselves in the smallest
of all the well-known cellars in Mendoza, something
absolutly different from what we've seen in this
journey.
Lunlunta is a priveleged zone for the Malbec grape,
and here you can find the most ancient ones. The
estate is placed on top of lovely hills with short
vineyards, the "not to be missed" olives,
some fruit trees, a house and a small cellar that
because of its size looks like a scale model. As
soon as you enter, you will be astonished: six small
tanks of stainless steel with only a 550 liter capacity,
a few small oak barrels in the basement, and a tasting
area with all its supplies.

 |
And
now it´s time to spend the night in a magical
and heavenly place. Cavas Wine Lodge is the first
Wine Hotel in Argentina, right in the middle of
the vineyards and with a great view of the Andes.
This exclusive lodge has distinctive bedrooms, wine
cellars with wines from all over the country, a
restaurant with signature cuisine and the region's
specialities, swimming pool and a spa with different
natural treatments. |
 |
In
the last part of our northern journey and before
going south, we will visit one of the most famous
and recognized wine cellars in the country: Terrazas
de los Andes. This wine cellar, with a more than
50 year experience in high-altitude vineyards, is
able to determine just the right altitude for each
variety. The gradual elevation of the terraces from
the city of Mendoza towards the west just to the
Andes Mountain Range, creates a broad range of microclimates.
The fact of using altitude as a tool, allows enologists
to grow variety in a particular climate. Consequently,
fully ripened grapes are obtained with a perfect
balance between sugars and acids, producing exquisite
aromas and velvety tannins.

Visiting
the Uco Valley that includes Tupungato, Tunuyán
and San Carlos, we discover the richness of its
colors crossed by the Tunuyán River, creeks
and fresh and clear springs while arriving at the
Salentein Vineyards. The total surface of the state
rises to two thousand hectares, distributed along
a series of elevations, the highest in the world.
The spring water turns this dry zone into an oasis.
The evening in Salentein Inn will allow us the tasting
of wines and degustation of regional dishes, all
under a relaxed ambience. A bycicle ride, a walk
around the vineyards and the swimming pool with
a killing view, are some of the services and atracctions
that this inn offers.
|
 |
Through
the southern access, straight to San Rafael, we
arrive at the peaceful backwater of Los Alamos.
This will be our operation base in the zone. From
here we will visit the most important wine cellars
in the region.
|
 |
 |
The
first one, Jean Rivier. Its wines are known more
around the world than in Argentina. They can only
be purchased throughout wine clubs. The cabernet-fer
(fer: a rare kind that can hardly be found here)
destined for export showed a new style, attractive
in its austere and fresh taste. |
 |
Our
trip continues to the Lavaque wine cellars, amazing
for its colonial architecture from the year 1889.
Inside, the refined rooms combine treasures from
the past with modern equipment. In the twilight
of the cellar the French and American oak barrels
rest. |
 |
 |
To
finish our journey we arrive at the Bianchi wine
cellars. The fresh champagne cellars are located
just under the hill where the estate´s facilities
were built. We will taste different wine samplings,
amongst them those of champagne. |
 |
When
we return to Los Alamos, after two traditional bell
rings that invite us in to the dining room, we must
wait for the delicious feast that will make its
appereance from the kitchen. We willl also have
"asados" -the argentinian barbecue- in
front of the irrigation ditch facing th vineyards
under the shade of the "aguaribay". |
